OS Wars

OS Wars is a competition where teams of designers and programmers collaborate to create unique operating systems. Each round, teams are tasked with creating a different part of the OS, with the challenge evolving each year. The host of the competition changes yearly, allowing for a new approach to how the competition is structured.

History

The OS Wars competition began in 2014 and has continued annually, with different hosts each year shaping the competition's structure and challenges.

Scratch

Scratch is a visual programming language and online community developed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). It is widely used by beginners to create interactive stories, games, and animations through a simple drag-and-drop interface.

OS Wars is organized and hosted through Scratch, most commonly through studios and userpages, though recently development has moved to Discord. Nonetheless Scratch plays a critical part in the competition; for publishing the final product and for development itself.

Blue OS

Blue OS was introduced in OS Wars 2 (2016) and has since become one of the most recurrent teams in the competition. Known for its innovative designs and technical prowess, Blue OS has participated in nearly every OS Wars event.

Green OS

Green OS made its debut in OS Wars 2 (2016) and quickly became a staple in the competition. Along with Blue OS and Red OS, Green OS has been a constant presence throughout the competition's history, known for its stability and strong user interface designs.

Red OS

Red OS was introduced in OS Wars 2 (2016) and has participated in all subsequent OS Wars events. Known for its bold, cutting-edge ideas and experimental features, Red OS has become one of the most iconic teams in the competition.

Amber OS

Amber OS was first introduced in OS Wars 5 (2019) and was the fourth team to participate in the competition during that year. Despite being a latecomer compared to other teams like Blue, Green, and Red OS, Amber OS quickly gained recognition for its unique approach to software development and design. It returned to critical acclaim for OS Wars 10 (2025).

Violet OS

Violet OS was introduced in OS Wars 6 (2020). Serving only one OS Wars competition, it's tenure was short yet memorabe.

Orange OS (7)

Orange OS (7) was introduced in OS Wars 7 (2022), replacing Amber OS from the prior to it's predecessor OS Wars 5 (2019), including using the same logo design with the Labrys. If you are referring to the operating system in the OS Wars X (2023) competition, you can find it here.

Orange OS (X)

Orange OS (X) was introduced in OS Wars X (2023). It was one of the three special operating systems created for the competition. If you are referring to the operating system in the OS Wars 7 (2022) competition, you can find it here.
